Iāll probably be in today, will have a look then. Is the jumper still on the foot brake switch? AFAIK thatās the only switch that was giving me grief.
Fixed it. For the record, one of the motor overloads tripped. It was set to 6a, Iāve upped it to 7a as thatās what the other is. Shifting from forward to reverse while itās still spinning may cause this but I couldnāt recreate the problem.
Honestly Iām not worried until it starts to becomes a tool rather than something we are fixing, but the issue is the only 3 phase cord we have thatās long enough is massively overrated, making it heavy and really inflexible. However your concerns are noted, and this is something everyone working on the machine was already aware needs changing before we would mark the device as safe for work.
Absolutely man, it was never intended as a permanant solution, just a temporary solution for testing and repairs to see whether its worth spending money on. Its not close to a usable state yet, still doesnāt have a fully functional brake yet and needs some Big Red Buttons and swipe access on it before its fit for service.
So, this lathe has seen a bit of an upgrade electrically since this topic was posted.
Iāve since added a VFD to replace the original start gear, and a power switch to the front. Still gotta put it back together completely, wire that power switch in, and put a new plug on it.
As a result of the VFD it brakes electronically whenever it is stopped/brake depressed/taken out of drive. This slows it down a lot quicker than it would otherwise, and is most noticeable on the highest gearing. One thing to note is this dumps a lot of power into a small resistor, so try not to go start and stop the highest speed too often.
Itās been brought up occasionally that we should sell this lathe as itās non functional, this is incorrect. It works fine, however has some gearbox quirks. Definitely worth considering keeping for larger stuff if we clean it up.
Can you hazard a guess at an ideal wattage and value for that braking resistor? I can probably make you something suitable out of bits I have kicking around.
