Metal Shop Action Plan

Metal Shop Evolving vision strategic Plan
Introductory statement:
This plan has been developed for the purpose of bringing the metal shop up to a high standard of cleanliness, accessibility with good working condition machines.
This plan also incorporates short and long term goals, objectives, needs and resources that are intended to take HSBNE into the future.
Authors of the plan:
Craig Rea (current Metal Shop Leader)

Organizational Structure:
The metal shop has come a long way since its establishment through many changes, improvements and upgrades, trying to establish a foundational structure with the right machines and tooling that works for the needs and desires of the members of HSBNE.
We believe that we are on the right track to achieving this goal and it’s through this plan that the improvements will continue.
Vision:
A comprehensive work shop that is clean and convenient for members to get access to working machines and tooling.

Values:
To always maintain a clean and tidy work space/environment with a high standard of safety and a respect for other members of HSBNE using the metal shop.
Mission Statement:
To make available to members of HSBNE large and expensive machines that they would normally not be able to own because of limited space and 3 phase electricity.

Infrastructure
The metal shop will be undergoing an infrastructure change, consisting of electrical upgrades, walls and floor painted and machines, benches and cabinets repositioned.
Time line for this to be complete is dependent on a few factors like a new lease agreement, landlord approval and funds.
Proposed time for completion end of march 2021

I’ll admit, I’ve only skimmed through the tool details, but what an astounding amount of detail and planning! Tagging @GeoffC, as he’s offered to work on the Wiki and a lot of the info is here!

Craig, I want to sincerely congratulate you on the thoroughness and extent n of your document. Outstanding work!! I hope this sets a precedent for the exactness and profesionalism of other causes work!!

thanks Emily and Zack, there is still some areas that need addressing but a good start. Geoff has offered to help with the documenting of the machines and tooling onto wiki, which I am very grateful and helps us all to get the space up to a high standard.
I would like to put it out to metal shop members first and then the rest of the members for there help in achieving the tasks that have been listed in the plan by there allotted time. my goal is to give out assignments of the various task to the suited member to complete.
If nobody objects to this initiative then I will move forward with the assignments. thank you in advance for all your help. Craig

Excellent work @reatek66! That is certainly a thorough plan!

Like it says above. I am working on the Wiki part. If you want to help build the wiki there is plenty of opportunity. Our most excellent and fearless cause leader has given us a solid foundation and big head start. Note Metalworking has a LOT OF TOOLS.

Members can help by understanding that the wiki will be built from the top down, first publishing all Cause tools, then into the details for each tool page. My approach is to first publish all the tools but with an ‘empty’ page. Then go back and complete each tool page.

Members are asked to

  • Photograph groups of hand tools and tool chests that look like they would go the tool page.

  • Complete each tool page with the info in the Cause Plan. It may seem odd but I’m looking at sending you two text documents from the Wiki page editor. One is a completed page, the other is for you to ‘fill in’ based on the completed page. That way you do not need to be online or concerned about mistakes. I’'ll sort that part.

Help with getting member photos and pages into the editing process. My concern is keeping track of member contributions, also getting lost in and between Discord, Wiki etc . For me direct email is looking good as I can track member, time and tool in subject heading. But I get it about not wanting to share email addresses. I’m still very new at HS so cannot workout about gathering member help. Is a direct email, direct msg or other the best option? If anyone can suggest a best way of getting files into the editing process you have my greatest thanks.

Craig. I salute you. Thanks for great commitment, plan and vision for Metalworking.
