We are starting to explore how we can re-activate the metalshop. We obviously have VERY limited space, so it will look very different.
In order to best understand the needs, what do you want out of the metalshop? What are the essential capabilities you are looking for? Is it welding, maching, grinding, CNC? Let me know. 
Machines that are less likely to be owned at home. This is my preference, in order.
1/2 Lathe
1/2 Mill
3 TIG
4 Horizontal bandsaw
5 Coldsaw
CNC (hildi style) goes in that list somewhere
Metal sheet cutter also goes in the list
I am putting together a proposal for a 1.2m2 CNC plasma cutter ($6-15k), a small lathe, mill small bandsaw CNC(HILDI) TIG . Iām also nearly ready to start the setup at my place (7 minutes from Sumner) and looking at options to use space at mine (start a club, peppercorn rental agreement with HSBNE etc) that may provide options. The limit will be power as only 1 phase so all motors need VFDs. There is now quite a bit of metalworking equipment there.
