Help / suggestions needed for building a 1-1.5m tall robot to follow a HSBNE group during Brisbane on Parade on the 1st of November

Thats great news!
Would you like me to transfer some money to you?
If so how much are you willing to put in?

I currently have like $40 to my name and $20 of that is currently acting as deposit on the saw haha. So I have nothing to put in, but I will later this week. Would it be possible to come and pick up some cash from you?

Iā€™m working at Suncorp tomorrow, so any pickup would have to be done before 11.

I told him Iā€™d be there at nine, is that too early to come round?

will get some money out tonightā€¦

Pm me your address and Iā€™ll head over when youā€™re ready.

We have a new saw! Its lovely and Iā€™ll install it properly this week. Canā€™t wait!

Hy guys, great to see a lot of interest in this project.

I have a telephone conversation scheduled for tomorrow morning in relation to getting some funds in as soon as possible so I will keep you updated.

I have also sent an email to the seller of the motor controller to see if he can deliver it on time.

Also I dropped off the motors yesterday at the space. They are in the laser cutter room.

If there is anything in particular (perhaps in the electronics department) that we would need to purchase, please let me knowā€¦ I know it is a stretch because of the limited amount of time, but we could try to make it autonomous.

Cheers

its a great idea, but since there is minimal time and much could go wrong without prior testing on location. I would advise against an autonomous solution.

Thatā€™s a whoooole lot of legs to flail!

Given this is a parade type deal I think light and sound should be a big deal, maybe some kind of interactivity to get the crowd involved. Iā€™d be happy to donate a 3rd SLA battery if peeps wanted to go nuts with the shock and awe

Did someone say, water cannon gun turrets?

If you wanted to go all out make the bipedal strandbeest that Gakken released a while back. I also have a small scale kit for that.

I think that version would require a lot more one off parts, the regular strandbeest design is 6-7 parts repeated 12 times which is going to be much easier to construct in a hurry. Iā€™m ordering some steel today and Iā€™ll attempt to have a pattern to go off by the end of next week.

I have ordered the motor controller. We should get it sometime next week. Anything else needed in the electronics department that we canā€™t source?

Any lights/LEDs/lazers it wants to have on it? Whats the deal with this parade? where does it end? does it and at any kind of public gathering? is there an opportunity for us to milk further publicity at the other end? Can we look semi official at this place? Is it worth getting some shirts made/making some shirts for the day? any other ideas to milk this for every possible opportunity for getting our name out?

+1 to LEDs (addressable RGB strips?), lights, EL wire. If we wanted to go loud I may have some old car stereo stuff I can loan. I dropped off the batteries tonight, left them on the bench with Victors motor assembly. Iā€™m also a member now so keen to help out with electrical/wiring and general labour for this projectā€¦

EL wire wouldnā€™t work since ELā€™s a bit too dim for daylight viewing. LEDs would totally work though.

Personal opinion here - to someone whoā€™s never seen one before (or to a young kid), the multi-legged monstrosity of a Strandbeest can be a little scary and creepy. I was talking to @rut4ger about this at the space tonight - whatever we do to style it, it should try to be ā€œfriendlyā€ or not too jarringly, outrageously attention-grabbing since the walking legs alone will do that. Painting it black & adding big red flashing eyes may make for a cool-looking evil spider but it wonā€™t win us many points in a public parade, hehe.

The two batteries @sirhc dropped off were reading a little low (~90% capacity) so I charged them both up and equalised their voltages. Theyā€™re good to go!

We have fasteners, bearings are on their way, and steel is ready to be picked up.

I have an issue with the steel though. The mob I went through, was cheap enough that even after paying $80 for delivery, they were still cheaper than anywhere else, so I donā€™t mind paying it. However, $80 is $80, does anyone have a vehicle capable of carting 6.5m lengths of steel? It would save us $80. If I donā€™t hear from anyone in the near future Ill just get them to send it.

Iā€™ve got a car with roof racks but 6.5m is probably a little too longā€¦
